I have a family member who’s suffered from depression since childhood.
Major debilitating depression.
Long periods of treatment with psychiatrists and therapists.
Seasons of despondency, phobias, and withdrawal.
Years on one medication…then another…. that disappeared into the oblivion of pain, hopelessness, and despair.
Do you know anyone like this?
You may not be aware that there’s an old anesthesia that’s being used in a new way with startling results.
Ketamine has been through the ranks…first as a widely used anesthesia for both animals and humans…then as a street drug…they call Special K.
Street drug goes heroic
IV ketamine for psychiatric mood disorders is proving to be the greatest psychiatric breakthrough in decades. Turns out that it also has remarkable effects on suicidal thinking and psychiatric mood disorders in small doses… disorders like depression, anxiety, and PTSD that haven’t responded to anything else.
When someone has been depressed for years, and medication and therapy have made no difference, they call it treatment-resistant depression, or treatment-resistant bipolar disorder, etc.
And here’s the reason why all the traditional medicines don’t always help:
Because depression isn’t caused by just one thing.
All those medicines out there are designed to treat mood disorders that are caused by a problem with serotonin or dopamine.
But there are other causes for these disorders, like other neurotransmitters such as glutamate, and other chemical systems like NMDA receptors…or AMPA…
Long story short, we’ve been needing new ideas and new science to treat people who haven’t been helped by traditional antidepressants for a very long time.
I say “we”…not because I’m a neuroscientist and part of the solution in that sense, but because I’m a member of society who loves some people with psychiatric disorders, and I align myself with those who ARE neuroscientists and psychiatrists and support them with my money and marketing… because of those I love and know, and because of those I don’t know but do understand.
IV Ketamine for Psychiatric Mood Disorders
So back to ketamine, the anesthesia, and the abused and misunderstood street drug…and the most remarkable antidepressant this world has seen in decades.
In fact, ketamine is changing the face of psychiatry.
And the pharmaceutical companies are scrambling to develop more modifications of it in a quest to find drugs they can refine for greater profits and more benefits without side effects.
That remains to be seen.
But they’re advancing toward FDA approval.
At any rate, there’s lots going on in this area…lots to talk about as we go along.
If you have a loved one who struggles with depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other mood disorders, there is a hope that previously didn’t exist.
